A Special Father’s Day Devotional.
Genesis 27 [ And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death.
... . And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not. And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him. And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am . .... And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed: Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
The true father’s blessing is the transfer of what belongs to you by the Spirit of God through a father figure. Indeed Rebekah fooled the aging Isaac leveraging his weakness – a hunger for venison and misguided senses ...but what did this produce but lies. It produced a wrong and painful courtship in the house of Laban to the alluring Rachel who introduced idolatry into his life. It was a premature and forced blessing that had nothing to offer but more foolishness, family trouble, guile, theft, conflict, pain, barrenness and ultimately death. But God had ordained that Jacob was going to be blessed and this was still his destiny despite false starts.
Eventually Jacob realises he picked up nothing but empty words and becomes a perpetual hunter for the blessing he knew was rightly his ...having dreams and visions of blessings which he never quite entered into, wrestling with an angel who introduced a limp to slow down his surefooted plots. But it was not until in Genesis 35 when Jacob confronted all the strange gods in his household (Gen. 35:2...put away all the strange gods that are among you and be clean, and change your garments...”) – that he makes an altar in the place called Elbethel and God appears to the now broken and ready Jacob ... eight chapters and many years after his self-willed deceptive encounter with his father, Isaac .
Genesis 35 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him. And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel. And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
Get rid of the idols, lies and strange gods. On this day, honour your earthly father - remembering that God has chosen him as an instrument of blessing for your life. Do not be in a hurry to move ahead of the direction and guidance of parents. Do not be envious of your brother who seems to have an edge over you – there is no need to scheme for that which is not being offered to you ... shun competition. Your race is uniquely yours. Fathers, do not tempt your children to bribe you with gifts. The best thing you can give your children is not money - but the knowledge and fear of God in a culture that disdains God. Children, be careful how you treat your father. Deception will only harvest more deception. A bribe to obtain the love and endorsement of an aging dad may succeed to manipulate him but you will only have reaped the wind.
Jacob’s blessing was reserved for him and he still found it. You will still be blessed.
