Paralyzed Steve Saint: 'Give God All You've Got'

Homemade cards and crayon drawings lining the wall of missionary Steve Saint's hospital room show the boundless impact he's made over the years.

Saint built his I-Tec ministry on the idea of developing some of the most innovative gadgets to help share the Christian faith in otherwise untouched parts of the world.

Now unable to feed himself because of a paralyzing accident June 13, Saint is hoping advanced technology will help him walk again.

He was scheduled for surgery Tuesday to relieve pressure on his spine. Right now, a slight raise of his limp arms is about all the movement he can get his body to make.

"I can tell you I've never felt this helpless before," Saint said in a video posted to his Facebook page.

He described the "pain" and "fear" he's experienced since his accident. Yet, even as he lay in bed facing a reality of future surgeries and grueling physical therapy, Saint said he has not once asked "Why me?"

"In these last six days I have been through more pain than I ever imagined possible," he said. "But the amazing and encouraging thing to me is that, honestly, not one time have I wondered or wanted to ask God why this happened."

He grew emotional as he talked about his life being "turned upside down" and urged people to look beyond their situation and give God their all -- no matter how small it may seem.

"Let's give Him everything. No holds barred, nothing held back," Saint said with tears in his eyes. "He only expects us to give Him what we have. For some of us, that's not very much, but at certain points in our life, it's enough."

After surgery, Saint will have to teach his body how to move again. Still, his current state hasn't detracted from his purpose.

"I know that God has compassion on His people, whether they know they're His or not," Saint said. "And I think that if we're gonna tell the world about Jesus, we're gonna have to do it in new and creative ways. That's what I've gotten to do over the last years."

"If God is prompting you to get out there and get involved in the fray, then please do it," he continued, suggesting I-Tec as a place to start.

"If you feel like you're all thumbs," Saint said, chuckling as he lifted his hand a bit, "Come on, join the crowd. I'm there, too."

He ended with a simple, "Thanks."

Saint was testing a new device for his ministry last Wednesday when part of it detached and hit him in the head, paralyzing him below the neck.

Saint followed in the footsteps of his father, Nate Saint -- the devoted Mission Aviation Fellowship pilot who was killed in 1956 while trying to evangelize to the Waodani people in Ecuador.
