HHS Sec: More Must be Done on LGBT Health Care
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said more work is needed to ensure quality health care for homosexuals.
Speaking at a Human Rights Campaign sponsored press conference, Sebelius highlighted a report put out by the Healthcare Equality Index that ranks facilities on their care of gay and lesbian patients.
The annual report grades criteria such as visitation policies and training on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patient-centered care. Researchers found that 57 percent of the facilities qualified as leaders in demonstrating equality health care to gay patients.
Sebelius praised the strides being made.
"I want to commend the Human Rights Campaign and LGBT communities for the progress being made," she said.
"And I am proud to be part of an administration that has a historic record of accomplishment for the LGBT community and the head of a department that has played a key role in these efforts," she added.
Sebelius said the Department of Health and Human Services has set even more goals for improving equality in healthcare.
"We will continue to take action to ensure that LGBT Americans get equal treatment in health-care settings and that all patients are treated with the dignity they deserve," she said.
