Same-sex Marriage and the Betrayal of Culture

Several decades ago, Mr. Culture led a team to negotiate a truce with Mr. Church, also with his own zealous army. What was the issue of contention? Mr. Church needs fast growth and market penetration especially of youth ... the future - perturbed at the dire prospect of its vacant cathedrals auctioned to less virtuous bidders. Members of Mr. Culture's team on the other hand are concerned at the overly restrictive teachings and many legalistic don'ts making life unbearable ... specifically for women, teens and young adults. These are in aspects limiting new creativity for fashion, music and entertainment ... damning stance on divorce and of course abortion. Mr. Culture's asserts that we are no more in first century AD Jerusalem .. .times have moved and Mr. Church must desist from insisting on its medieval instructions negating the new progressivism and be more winsome.

Mr. Church however has an agenda. Let them come into the fold as they wish, if they insist we must relax the standards, we will do so - knowing the young lamb of Christ must ultimately grow someday and hear the Good Shepherd and be transformed. Mr. Culture also has an agenda ... to introduce slowly but deliberately newer and more far reaching propositions over a well timed scale and to penetrate clergy. He sniggers "when we have established the principle, Mr. Church - now quieted on cultured vices like divorce, drinking and greed ... seduced by cultures pulsating music ... will be compelled to accept everything else."

Both teams bring hidden agendas to the table even as some churches reject the terms and do not join Mr. Church's team. These are quickly labeled as unprogressive rebels or cults ... loss of membership, crippling finances soon snuff out the voices of these splinter elements.

It is several decades later, Mr. Church has grown phenomenally and things couldn't be better (at least financially) or so it seems. Indeed, many converts have been transformed ... a few did not do as well as expected but God has been faithful. Mr. Culture is equally pleased ... he has not stopped at convincing the church to embrace the glamorous television, media and all the Hollywood accoutrements ... now he presents to the genuinely shocked Mr. Church the conundrum of same-sex marriage. Mr. Church is alarmed "surely we are the Church and can't have anything to do with this?" ... and cautions Mr. Culture ..." alas, you go too far..."... Mr. Culture replies " and why not ... what is the difference between this and the other tolerated habits that I have engineered ... if vain living, which the Bible (you quote) abhors is today your norm ... what do you have against women marrying women or men marrying animals ...If the culture one day accepts it ..and medical, social and scientific progress are permissive ... "

Mr. Culture knows He has won the battle, as long as the principle to negotiate with him is sustained. Mr. Church also knows he has won because the Bible says "I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it"

The Church is built and wins on the revelation of Christ, the living word ... the one and only foundation. Negotiating with changing and unpredictable traditions of men is fruitless in all its ramifications. And If culture and tradition seems on your side today ... be watchful and suspicious of all its well meaning motives ...
