Stuck in the Fireplace

Stuck in the Fireplace

KA-THUMP! "What's that noise?" asked Carlos as he and Alex played in Alex's living room.

"Sounded like something fell down the chimney," said Alex. He ran to the fireplace and peered up. Jumping back, he gasped, "There's a squirrel sitting on the soot shelf in there. He's staring at me." Alex frowned. "He can't stay there. He'd get burned when we have a fire."

"What should we do?" asked Carlos. "If we open the screen and try to chase him out, he'll probably run all over and get soot on the furniture and stuff."

"Well, we gotta get him out!" exclaimed Alex. "Since Mom's gone to the grocery store, we'll have to do it." He glanced down at his T-shirt and shorts. "Squirrels can be mean when they're cornered. Let's put on heavier clothes."

The boys ran to the hall closet and put on long coats, heavy mittens, and boots. Alex found ski masks for both of them. Taking a fish net, they cautiously opened the fireplace screen just a little. Alex raised the net, and with a quick movement, he whipped it over the squirrel. It squirmed and scratched as Alex carried it outside where he shook the net open. The squirrel escaped, and once free, the quivering mass of fur shot up the nearest tree. Safe on a limb, it clacked angrily at the boys.

Just then, some kids on bikes came by. They laughed loudly and pointed at Alex and Carlos. The two of them looked at each other and grinned. It was a hot summer day, but they were dressed more like it was the middle of winter! As they dashed, laughing, into the house, Alex's mom arrived home.

"We rescued that squirrel so it could run free," said Alex when they told his mother the story, "but it acted like we were its enemies and fussed at us."

"Yeah. It wanted to stay in that dirty, dark, old fireplace," said Carlos. "It didn't even know it was in danger there."

Mom smiled. "That's a dangerous place to be," she agreed. She looked thoughtful. "But you know what?" Mom added. "Like that squirrel, some people don't seem to understand that they are in danger. They're in danger spiritually when they don't know Jesus. They need to trust in Him and be free."

"We do," said Alex, "No soot shelf for us!" Smiling, Carlos nodded.

HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you aware that life without the Lord is like living on the soot shelf—existing in the dark world and in danger of going to hell? Today’s Scripture says that if you don’t believe in Jesus, you are “condemned already.” But you don’t have to stay that way. You can come to the light—the Lord Jesus. He wants to rescue you—to set you free from the penalty of sin. (See the ABCs of Salvation at the end of this book.)

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: (John 8:36)
If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
