O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

America the Beautiful is a much beloved patriotic song of the United States. It was written by english professor, Katharine Lee Bates, after taking a train trip across the country to teach at Colorado College. The grandeur of Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountain range inspired the words which would eventually become America the Beautiful.Originally, however, her words were compiled as a poem simply entitled, “Pikes Peak.”

Most of the pictures in this blog tribute were taken of Pikes Peak during the Waldo Canyon fire of June 2012. Please pray for the City of Colorado Springs who literally has fire breathing down her neck tonight after ferocious winds suddenly raced down the front range destroying everything in its path. I've never seen such fury!
