Lhe Secret of Marriage

Lhe Secret of Marriage

The simple truths in life are so valuable. Last week, I watched a web video interview of Pastor Chuck Smith, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Church in Costa Mesa, Calif., and the founder of the Calvary Chapel movement. He was asked, “What is the secret to a long and successful marriage?” Pastor Chuck, as he is known, had a candid answer: “I think it’s having Christ at the center.”

One of the great tragedies of the modern church era is that self-centeredness defines too many marriages. Pastor Chuck, married for 63 years to his wife Kay, notes that differences and challenges in relationships will always be there, but if we can bring those struggles to the Lord, marriages will not just survive, they will thrive. When disagreements come, he says, Christians simply need to say, “Now, Lord, you guide us in this.”

There are a lot of temptations out there and there are a lot of things that can draw our attention from living out the maxim of “Not I, but Christ,” whether in our marriages, in our private lives or in our public lives. But as Pastor Chuck notes, we need to be pausing all the time to understand and confront our challenges and then seek out Jesus and allow Him to guide us through them (Romans 12:2). We quite literally will fail at life without Christ at the center of all we do.

Pastor Chuck concluded his diagram for marriage by saying, “It’s not my mastering over her or her mastering over me, but it’s both of us being mastered by Jesus Christ.” Again, this is a simple truth, but it is a powerful truth that needs to be the centerpiece of every Christian marriage.

SPECIAL INVITATION

I wanted to invite those within driving distance to join us for our annual “Celebrate America” event at Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Va. It is this Sunday (July 1) 3:00 – 10:00 p.m. It will be a great day and evening of family, food, fun and honoring our nation, with the concluding event being a wild fireworks display.
