Russia, Syria Deny War Games with Iran, China

JERUSALEM, Israel - Russian and Syrian officials have dismissed Iranian media reports that Iran, Russia, China and Syria were planning war game exercises for next month, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's semi-official FARS News Agency reported that the four countries were planning to take part in the "biggest-ever war games in the Middle East."

According to the report, 90,000 troops, 1,000 tanks, 400 aircraft, warships, submarines, destroyers, and minesweepers were scheduled to rendezvous along the coast of Syria within a month for the massive exercise.

Egypt has given China permission to send 12 warships through the Suez Canal, which reportedly will dock at Syrian ports over the next two weeks.

The announcement came on the second day of meetings between Iran and the P5+1 -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany -- in Moscow.

Both Russia and China have vetoed military intervention in Syria and additional economic sanctions against Iran at the U.N. Security Council.

Tuesday's report also comes on the heels of Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement that he will visit Israel on June 25.

FARS admitted no official announcement had been made and cited only "unofficial sources."
