Wisconsin Voters Decide Walker's Future in Office

Wisconsin Voters Decide Walker's Future in Office

Wisconsin voters are deciding whether to boot Republican Gov. Scott Walker and replace him with Milwaukee's Democrat Mayor Tom Barrett.

The grudge match between public sector labor unions and Walker has dragged on for more than a year, and voters are clearly split.

"Wisconsin has made a change. I've worked with different governors in different volunteer capacities and this is the best we've ever had it," Walker supporter Lupe King said.

Walker backer Conrad Gerszewski said he felt the recall was a waste of time and money.

Click play to watch Dale Hurd's report followed by more on what to expect from the recall election with CBN News Chief Political Correspondent David Brody.

"On an issue that isn't a matter of 'Did the government perform illegally or immorally,' it's just 'I don't like him, I'll have him recalled.' That's money taxpayers are paying and it doesn't prove anything," he said.

But opponents feel otherwise, choosing to back Mayor Barrett.

"I'm hoping he can get teachers back to work and unions back," Eunice Harris, supporter of the Democratic challenger.

"The people of the state are just fed up," another Barrett supporter Carolyn Hoy said.

The recall effort has been all about Walker's controversial move to strip most public employees of their ability to collectively bargain with the government.

Democrats and unions gathered more than 900,000 signatures for the recall after they failed to stop Walker and Republicans in the state legislature.

Walker has argued that the move was needed to balance the state's budget.

"We took on the powerful special interests. I'll continue to stand with the hard working taxpayers of this state," Walker told supporters.

At least $60 million has been spent on the recall campaign; most of it from outside the state.

Polling gives the edge to Walker, who told reporters at his polling station, "Most voters want the election over with."

When asked what tomorrow's headline would read, the mayor of Milwaukee responded, "Tomorrow's headline? Barrett Wins, Barrett Wins."

Walker is only the third governor in U.S. history to face a recall vote. If he wins, he'll be the first to successfully fend it off. His lieutenant governor and three Republican state senators also face recall.

President Obama has been conspicuous in his absence, steering clear of Wisconsin. He hasn't campaigned once for the Democratic candidate.

Some believe a win for walker means Obama could face a tough time winning the deep-blue state of Wisconsin in November.
