We Need More Power!

We Need More Power!

Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that I am both politically savvy, and disinterested. Politics are no more than the means by which those hungry for power can fill their vacuous need. For most, this appears to be an insatiable craving, this need for power. When was the last time an elected official said that s/he was going to give up some of his authority? Say what you will, but I am sold on the notion that the man or woman who goes into national politics, however noble their intentions may be on the outset, all end up the same. Republican or Democrat, left or right - however you wish to divide the field - it all matters very little, because they all end up the same. Gone are the days of reluctant politician. We are now well into the time of the career politician, and that in itself is troubling enough.

Yet, I have no problem looking past all of that rubbish. The corruption, the avarice, the pride - at the end of the day it has very little effect on me. Others seem to place all that they are and all that they can be in the hands of our elected officials, which is folly. At every opportunity, I like to spread a wonderful little doublet found in Psalm 118. Verses 8-9 read, "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in men. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes." The lesson is simple - place your trust and hope in Christ and nothing that the hands of man, regardless of their office in life, can ever do to you. Christ himself tells us in Matthew 10.28, "Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body but not the soul. Rather be afraid of the One who can kill both body and soul in hell." The worst that mortal man can do to you is take your life from you, but if you believe in Christ then you know there is an eternity after this life, and failure to serve the One True Lord can result in an eventuality much worse than what one might endure at the hands of men.

So, again, I can look past the acts of corruption that are now so commonplace in the halls of power, because at the end of the day I believe that it makes little difference in the things that matter in our lives. However, recent developments by President Obama threaten to interfere with the things that do truly matter. President Obama, as most reading this are likely aware, has decided to insert himself into the affairs of the Church. He feels that he has the authority to tell the Church what it should is should not do. He is attempting to take religious liberty - the first right afforded us in the Bill of Rights - and dash it on the rocks. He is telling the Church that they must go against their centuries old position on contraception for no other reason than to bring that old religious institution more inline with contemporary values.

The issue at stake is not one of pro-life vs. pro-choice, as some would have you believe. The issue, rather, is that of power. Whether you are for or against abortion, contraception, and the like, is not what the president is concerned about. He has deemed that the Church is woefully antiquated, and needs to fall in line with global perspectives on morality. I refuse to wade into the waters of the abortion debate because, again, that is not what this is about. Our president is not satisfied with being the president. He wants to have control over the Church.

Religious liberty is a foundational freedom. It guarantees us all the right to adhere to whatever religious ideals we so choose, and to freely worship accordingly. This first amendment tells us we need not worry about an overbearing government that will come in and tell us what or how to worship. It is understandable that people will be upset about the 10 Commandments being on display on government property, just as it is understandable that public religion-specific prayer at secular events may offend some people. One should not be subject to suffer the religious actions of another if they are in disagreement. This recent move by the president to force the Church to cover abortions and contraception, however, represents nothing by a disturbing power grab. How the Church feels about those issues is a church matter, and those outside of the Church are not subject to the beliefs held therein. Whether the Church agrees or disagrees with the use of contraception affects no one but the Church, and no politician has any right to impose their personal feelings on the issue.
