Speak Up

Speak Up

I'm glad Uncle Jim finally came to church with us, thought Troy as they drove home. He never would come before. From the back seat of the car, Troy listened closely as his uncle and mother talked about the morning message.

"You don't really believe what that preacher said, do you, Linda?" asked Uncle Jim. "About the rapture and the tribulation and everything? Grandpa Casey used to say stuff like that, too. Way back when we were kids, he was always talking about Jesus returning and the end of the world. Nothing's happened yet."

"Sure it has. A lot has happened," Mom replied. "A great deal of prophecy has been fulfilled, even in our lifetime."

"Like the prophecies of Ezekiel and Jeremiah?" Troy asked.

Mom looked surprised. "What do you know about Ezekiel and Jeremiah?"

"Actually, quite a lot," Troy answered with a laugh. "In Sunday school, we've been studying some of the prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel."

Uncle Jim grinned. "Well, let's hear it, kid!" Troy knew his uncle was teasing him, kind of laughing at him, but he didn't care. People had made fun of the prophets, too.

"God used prophets to warn the Israelites that if they didn't repent of their sins, God would punish them. But the people wouldn't listen," said Troy. "My teacher said Jeremiah was heartbroken when he knew Israel was being taken captive by Babylon, and so they called him the weeping prophet.' I guess they were the ones weeping when his prophesies came true."

Troy's mother nodded. "Read the newspaper, Jim, along with some Bible prophecies," she said. "You'll find God's Word is still being fulfilled."

"I'd rather not think about it." Uncle Jim shrugged. "All that talk about people knowing ahead of time what would happen sounds creepy to me."

Troy started to tell his uncle that the death and resurrection of Jesus had also been foretold. When Uncle Jim refused to talk about it anymore, Troy decided he had said enough. I gave him God's message as good as I know how. Now I'll just pray for Uncle Jim, he decided, and trust God to change him.

HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you been laughed at for talking about Jesus? Do you get discouraged when those you witness to don’t want to hear about Him? Do you feel like you might as well forget trying to witness to them—that you’re too young to do that and they need someone older to explain how to be saved? Don’t give up. Pray for unsaved friends, give them God’s message like the prophets did, and leave the results to God. He can use people of any age—He can use you.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: (Jeremiah 1:7)
Do not say, “I am a youth,” for you shall go to all to whom I send you.
