Dust It Away

Dust It Away

"I like cooking, but I don't really like cleaning and dusting," Hannah muttered to herself. Still, she enjoyed a certain feeling of pride in making the house look nice. So when she noticed how busy her mother was one day, she decided to help without being told to do so.

"Thanks for helping me, honey," said Mom after they finished their work.

Hannah smiled and glanced around the newly cleaned living room. The sun shone brightly through the window. "Oh no!" she exclaimed as she looked at the end table. "I missed a spot when I dusted this morning. It took the sun to make it show up." She ran to get the dust cloth.

"You know something?" asked Mom thoughtfully as Hannah dusted the table again. "That's an illustration of what often happens in our spiritual lives."

"Like . . . what would that be?" Hannah asked.

"We may think we're doing well, that we're living a good life and everything is all right," Mom replied. "Then all at once, the Son, God's Son, points out some sin that needs to be cleaned away."

Hannah grinned and waved the dust cloth at her mother. "Want me to dust you, too?" she asked.

Mom laughed. "No, thanks," she said. "You can get rid of the dust on the table, but only Jesus can dust away the sin in our lives."

"Would that be kind of like John 8:36, my memory verse in Bible club this week?" Hannah asked. She quoted it. "If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." Hannah looked critically at the table she had just dusted. "I freed the table from dust, and Jesus frees us from sin," she added.

"Good thinking!" Mom approved. "God frees us from both the penalty of sin, which is death, and also from the power of sin. Because the Holy Spirit is living within us, we don't have to give in to temptation to sin."

Hannah gave the table one last swipe. "There!" she said. "No more dust."

"Very good!" exclaimed Mom. She smiled. "With Jesus' help, we'll be able to say that about our lives as well."

HOW ABOUT YOU?
Has the Son—the Lord Jesus—shown you some dust, or sin, in your life? Is there a lack of kindness, a need for more immediate obedience, a tendency to tell half-truths, or some other thing that needs to be dealt with? Whatever sin Jesus shows you, ask Him to dust it away—to free you from it. With God’s power, you can act as though you’re dead to sin but alive to God (see today’s Bible reading). Then you will be living the way He wants you to live.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: (John 8:36)
If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
