Socialist French President Could Anger Allies

France's new socialist president, Francois Hollande, could anger many of his country's allies on his first official to the United States.

Hollande will visit the White House Friday, where he is expected to announce he is withdrawing all 3,300 French troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year. That is two years ahead of schedule.

Political observers say the controversial decision could embarrass President Barack Obama. Hollande's predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, worked to improve relations with the United States.

Hollande will likely will face anger at a NATO summit in Chicago in the coming days. He will also have some explaining to do at the G-8 summit at Camp David Friday and Saturday.

The new French president will need to convince those leaders that his position on the European economy will not send the region into a deeper crisis.
