MTV Nixes Show Plans About Losing Virginity

MTV is known for pushing the limits with shows like "Jersey Shore," "The Real World" and "16 and Pregnant." But it seems the popular network is willing to draw the line -- if the protest is big enough.

A reality show about people losing their virginity was set to air on MTV soon, but the network has now scrapped the idea.

Earlier this month, MTV started scouting for the show, which would involve camera crews following individuals as they planned to have sex for the first time.

The network promised not to "film the act itself. Duh," but encouraged people to nominate friends who'd not yet had the chance to "explore" young adulthood.

"Do you want to take things to the next level? Like, are you ready to hand over your 'V card?' Or do you have a friend who is ready to lose it?" an online promotion for the show read.

But to MTV's surprise, reaction to the casting call was overwhelmingly negative.

"Viacom, which owns MTV as well as BET, Nickelodeon, and more, should be ashamed that its company is pandering to the gutter," said Dan Gainor, vice president of business and culture at the Media Research Center.

"This is part of the media attempt to mock people who have morals and to treat virginity like a disease that must be cured," he added.

Twitter also lit up with criticism.

"One more reason I am glad we canceled our cable a year ago," one person tweeted.

In response, an MTV representative told FOX411's Pop Tarts column, "We're not moving forward with a pilot."

Last December, the Parent's Television Council released a study on MTV content.

The watchdog group found that among the network's top-rated shows like "Jersey Shore" and "Teen Mom," 88 percent of dialogue involving women on the shows was sexual in nature or insulting.
